Gone are the days when a quality camera was a big, clunky thing. So before I get bombarded by comments concerning modern cameras, just let me say that I’m aware that, as the title says, size doesn’t mean anything nowadays.
Julian’s camera worked great. Sure, it didn’t have as many options and controls as my XL-1 and the depth of field wasn’t as cinematic as I would have liked, but the images were super clear and it worked out just fine.
Besides, with HD spreading like wildfire, my dusty old Canon XL-1 is becoming an antique. I don’t know when I’ll be able to afford a new camera, but I have my eyes on a few “cheap” ones. They’re full HD with excellent lenses, just the right amount of manual controls and to top it off it’s completely digital! Everything goes onto cards, no more crappy DV tapes.
And yes… they fit in my palm. 😀 😀

lol That’s great. I work filming my university’s (American) Football team. We have a few large professional grade cameras and a little baby camera that shoots in HD. We use that for ground and close game shots on field, highlight things.I must say, I like the little one on the ground, because it lets me get out of the way quicker when a football player is coming at me. Don’t care for the battery life though. I have a small HD Camera/Photograph combo thing that was fairly cheap. Nice card reader with it.
Keep up with your comics! They make me smile when I read through them. best of luck to you.
Yeah. Those little “hamsters” are nifty! 😀
If you want a fun new camera check out the AF-AG100 by panasonic. That little bugger will blow your mind. I just got one. You wouldn’t believe what a chip set that small can do with changeable lenses!
I checked it out and it looks like an amazing camera! All the great features you need and damn close to a 35mm camera as you can get.
Unfortunately the price is out of my budget. In Europe it’s around 6000€ !! which compared to the U.S. price of around $4500 is just ridiculous.
But for those interested in the camera, check out Phillip Bloom’s site. he does some excellent test footage and reviews of various cameras. Here’s the AG-AF100. Scroll to the bottom for the footage if you don’t want to read the review.
Cameras in that range, you can’t buy it for yourself, but you can rent it for a few days, if your job needs it, and if it is in your budget.
Or you must own a studio for film productions…
I’ve got a DSLR, the Canon 500D, If I would need it, I could make films with it, well the HD function is limited with this model. the newer 550D for example would be more useful, but however, recording sound with it doesn’t convince me.
But it’s weird that in theory one camera can be an allrounder today.
And -, I know that modern DSLR’s were used for filming some TV Episodes, “Doc House”, for example, – amazing…
However, a DSLR doesn’t seems handsome for filming.
🙂
Like I said above… If I were to rent that type of camera for a few days to a week (and, yes, I checked 😉 ) it would cost close to 2000€ !!
That’s almost half way to getting your own camera. If I were to dish out that much money, I’d rather put it towards payments for my own.
Yeah the Canon 5D and 7D have been used for lots of projects with great results. But you are presented with other costs like microphones, possibly a shoulder rig etc.
I do film production so my view may be a little skewed. The DSLRs are great, but they just can’t do audio. The cost of an external audio kit these days is more than getting a camera with built in 2 channel audio. As far as the Euro market is concerned I am mind blown! The Euro is worth more than U.S. $ these days. I can’t believe that the AG-AF100 is MORE in Euros. With the exchange rate it would be around $11,000. Glad I live in the states or I never could have afforded one. Still, it’s a great camera. Anyone who likes doing video should try it at least once. It’s just a blast getting film quality footage out of a camera you can hold in one hand. Hope you post the footage from your music video. I’d like to see what you got out of that hand-held.
Yeah, the prices are pretty crazy over here.
As for DSLRs… one of the hot new cameras is the Sony NEX-VG10. It basically has all the features that filmmakers like about the DSLRs except that it’s a video camera. And the price for the amount of features you get is a steal.
Unfortunately, right now I can’t even afford the cheapest Canon Legria. 😀
Wouldnt you be able to get a VAT rebate since its for business use ? Assuming you have your work done in your own 1 man company.
At the moment I’m not working with my own business. And even with a “cheap” professional camera, the 23% VAT doesn’t bring the price down enough.
Unfortunately.
Do you know anyone who has tried the Sony NEX-VG10 yet? I haven’t been able to find any test footage from it, and I would really like to see what it’s image quality looks like. Sorry to keep going on about the cameras. When you do it for a living you can’t stop when you get home.
Hi, I did find some test footages, but only in german.

There are a also few test videos.

Finally, they all are not complete fans of the camera.
Maybe you can use the google translator?
This footage is in English and the camera seems pretty great. In Europe it goes for around 1200-1500€. So still way out of my budget at the moment.

There’s two things that I can go on about forever: Comics and movies. And creating both.
Well, that’s four things actually. 😀
Size of modern high tech things does actually matter a bit. They’re usually small and because of that, they get in your way. This one time, I accidentally kicked someones iPhone while it was on the ground. I got bombarded by insults when the owner saw what I did. He should know better than just leaving his 300 euro phone on the ground.
“Oh, you mean this 300€ soccer ball?”
Better to kick an iBall instead an eye-ball. 😉
😀
That makes me want to put a camera in a hamsterball and sent it down the stairs
That would make for some funny footage.
