Unfortunately that is not that uncommon. As a field service technician once upon a time, I did some work for a large well known company here in the USA. The company I worked for had a policy in place for companies like them, pay up front with major credit card (in 2 hour blocks) or no work would be done at all. They tried pulling a fast one on me since I was the new guy, but I had been warned. Needless to say, their down equipment was costing them more money being down than it cost to pay me.
Moral – Clients must pay up front or risk losing much more money than if they were severely tardy on their payment of services.
Most times in the past I have the client pay at least half up front and then the second have as I hand over the product.
But in this case dealing with such a respected organization, I thought I could bill them without trouble. Turns out when it came time to pay they decided they didn’t want the product after all. So I was left with all the footage and the conversation above came later.
These guys, – did they really say you should do that without any money because you’re unemployed and therefore you should have time??
Didn’t the listen to themself what they are talking?
Even because you’re unemployed, they should give you some money, I call that “ein gutes Gewissen”.
Or they should spent to you some software updates, or some hardware.

And then the boss told me I’m too expensive.
(other graphic designers would kick me because I’m making dumping prices)
I’m still getting jobs from him, but …
And all my work, the covers, sleeves and so on is selling very well, and I hear from backwards around that my artwork is one of the reasons.
Now I’m doing something silly, starting with animation again, (2D).
I’ve got also some connections and maybe I can have a little income.
I’m still fighting.

They didn’t exactly come out and say that, naturally, but that was kind of the idea. And I’m not the only one. Their thinking seems to be: “Oh, So and So is unemployed? They’re probably more than happy to “help out” with some projects.” By the end you’ve ended up “Helping out” thousands of euros worth…!
About the “Unconditional Basic Income”… I can just imagine the U.S. freaking out on that. Remember their reaction to the socialized healthcare. Doesn’t matter that it’s a proven system used throughout the world, all they had to do was mention Socialism, Communism and Nazis to get the country in a craze. Hardly anyone even stopped to find out what socialized healthcare is actually about.
It’s our philosophy: you don’t work, you don’t get paid.
Even with the welfare system we have now people are into the 2nd and 3rd generations living off government money. Money that could go to scientific research, infrastructure improvements, etc.
A basic income can make people free from the modern slavery, jobs very less paid, so you need more than one job to survive, to pay your rent, to buy food.
Maybe you ask who would clean the city? Who puts the garbage away if no one would do these jobs anymore?
Simple, people will do this, employed people, but this time with fair money, and not a slavery dumping payment. That’s what a basic income will change!
They can choose now what kind of job they will do.
To much expensive? Oh, didn’t you know? Garbage can make money.
And by the way, scientific research is a business, there are still guys there who are making big money with it, – infrastructure improvements, don’t believe there’s none because of lazy people, – oops sorry, there are lazy people, lazy politicians mostly, next time you should elect some others, and don’t drink to much tea at your party, you know, many tea cups and you have to go very often to the bathroom
To FAR: I agree that there’s always those who will try to use the system. But those people are there no matter what, believe it or not, it’s not as easy to cheat the system as you might think.
But as for my socialized healthcare comment, taxpayers money should be used for the taxpayers…
But I’ve learned the hard way to stay out of political conversations about these things. They hardly ever lead anywhere.
You need to live in a country where you don’t have to worry about your children (or yourself) getting treatment without having to go into major debt or paying high medical insurance, before you REALLY realize the benefits of this system.
I would have to say that this is the main reason my wife and I decided to live here in Finland (where she is from) instead of the U.S. (where I am from). That and the education system here.
My sister and her husband ended up owing thousands of dollars for medical bills after having their children in the U.S. and didn’t get them paid off until the oldest was around 9 or 10 yrs of age despite having insurance that paid most of the bills .
I’d hate to think how much it would have cost nowadays to have our kid there when it was that expensive back then . Yay to living in Finland .
You should remember that the reason socialized healthcare works in most of the world is because the US fronts something like 95% of all medical research in the world. Because of this the people in the US pay high prices for medicine because the companies have to be able to make a profit, otherwise medical research would slow considerably. Since other countries don’t have to pay the massive research for medicine they are free to sell for very low prices.
The U.S. funding research (it’s NOT 95%, sorry…) has nothing to to with our tax money paying for healthcare. We still pay out the nose for our medicine. Medical companies make their money from ALL countries. The research is done all over the world too.
That has nothing to do with the government taxing us to provide us with healthcare. With socialized healthcare, everyone has a chance to get treated.
yup, im still owed aprox. $27 000 over the last 3 years of people and large companies doing the same, and yet they still call and bitch when the free work i did breaks down… because one of their guys thinks they know what they are doing, and threaten legal action. yay. i hate people.
